Open Air Market, Telephone Tribulations, Shopping 2/20/09

The Open Air Market, The Shopping, The Meal, The Phone Call, The Cabbie!

Hi Everyone!
These blogs are so fun to create and share our experiences with you!
Yesterday, Ted and I braved going by ourselves to a "traditional market," which is like a Farmers' Market in the States. To get there, we have to walk quite a distance down those famous steps and then through a tunnel that is a walkway that connects the University grounds with the first part of Kaohsiung City. In the tunnel is,currently, a display of lights that are neat to look at!! They reminded us of the lava lamps we all have seen!
Once we got to the correct street with the "traditional market," we pointed, used our calculator and any other gestures that worked to buy: fresh corn on the cob (that was delicious!!), fresh tomatoes (that I washed first in scalding water, as I do with ANY fresh fruit or veggie that does not have a peel!), fresh shrimp (complete with their heads with eyes staring at us), a wonderfully delicious pineapple (that they sliced for us right there), a cantaloupe (have not had that yet), and a couple of pairs of lightweight socks for me (the ones I packed are too heavy!)plus a strainer for our pasta and rice cooking efforts!
Today, we went to the Carrefour (the big grocery store), again using our very own taxi driver who is very friendly, responsible and inexpensive, so we will!). Taxis are quite inexpensive, and one is not to tip!

The other real challenge for us has been trying to make a call to the USA from here, so that Ted could contact his mom and see how she is doing directly (We did succeed, and she is making good progress, walking more, etc!). Basically, the problem was that what the international calling card said to do was incorrect!! Our friend Janet helped us out when she discovered the problem!
Tonight we have been invited to a "banquet," (their word). It is a big deal; everyone dresses up and there will be, we understand, many, many courses of food!
We continue to enjoy our adventures here! We hope to travel this weekend to the Kentung National Park, where we will stay overnight on Saturday night, as it takes under three hours to get there.
